The Real AI Bottleneck in Travel Content Is Copyright, Not Hallucination

    Íñigo Valenzuela, Founder, Smartvel

Everyone is worried about AI hallucinating travel content — but Íñigo Valenzuela argues the real liability is a misused photo, not a made-up fact. Valenzuela, founder of Smartvel, a travel content and traveler-support platform serving airlines, cruise lines, and OTAs including Iberia, Delta, and MSC, unpacks how AI is reshaping destination content economics, where the genuine legal risks lie, and why distribution — not product — is now the hardest problem for AI-native travel startups.

Íñigo Valenzuela is the founder of Smartvel, a travel content and traveler-support platform with over 13 years of operation, serving major airlines, airports, cruise lines, and OTAs worldwide including Iberia, Delta, United, Ryanair, and MSC. Before founding Smartvel, Valenzuela held C-level roles across the coach, travel agency, and business travel industries. The conversation traces Smartvel's origins as a destination events content business, web-crawling museum and exhibition sites to build monetizable agenda data, before COVID forced a dramatic pivot: repurposing that same crawling technology to track changing international travel restrictions in near real time, ultimately reaching around 30% of total international travelers through airline partnerships. As COVID restrictions faded, Smartvel pivoted again into visas, health documentation, and traveler support, acquiring Arrival Guides and Abuki in the process. Valenzuela explains why cruise documentation is uniquely complex — vaccination and visa requirements can shift depending on the order ports are visited, not just the destinations themselves — and how Smartvel's design philosophy filters rule sets to show travelers only the requirements relevant to their specific nationality, age, and itinerary. On AI, he contends that generic destination content is now effectively free and unwinnable at the individual query level, so Smartvel has repositioned upstream around inspiration and conversion. He warns that subsidized AI token pricing is temporary and that the most underappreciated legal risk in AI travel content is not hallucination but image licensing, since AI-generated visuals cannot be used commercially without cleared IP rights and fail badly outside famous landmarks.
