Who Can Still Design a Plane?
What if the world's largest aircraft manufacturers have quietly forgotten how to design a plane from scratch, and AI is accelerating the same knowledge fade everywhere else? Eric Bidinger, founder of hydrogen electric aircraft startup Blue Spirit Aero and AI platform Luca, unpacks why certification reaches down to individual rivets, how institutional knowledge vanishes between clean sheet programs, and why the AI model itself is the least important layer in an enterprise stack.
Show Notes
Eric Bidinger is the founder of two companies at opposite ends of the speed spectrum: Blue Spirit Aero, a Toulouse startup developing a hydrogen electric trainer aircraft for professional pilot schools, and Luca, an AI platform that combines business intelligence with access to capital for small and medium businesses. An engineer by training, Eric spent roughly 17 years in large buyout private equity before turning entrepreneur, and also helped found an eco resort in Mozambique. In this conversation he and host Alex Brooker open with the structural case for replacing the ageing light aircraft fleet, which still burns leaded fuel, with clean electric alternatives, driven by surging global demand for commercial pilots. Eric then explains why aircraft certification is so unusually demanding: regulators certify not just the finished airframe but the entire design process, meaning every decision, from the overall architecture down to individual rivet sizing, must be fully traceable, creating enormous documentary overhead even for a team of 20. He argues that long gaps between clean sheet programs at Airbus and Boeing have allowed critical institutional knowledge to retire with senior engineers, leaving the industry structurally vulnerable. Shifting to Luca, Eric outlines an enterprise AI stack of four layers in which ordered data, memory management, and human taste must all be in place before model choice becomes meaningful, and warns that frontier models have commoditised to the point where implementation, not model selection, is the real differentiator. He closes on Luca's data flywheel approach to business lending, where live operational data yields a far sharper credit picture than financial statements that are months old.
